Phonics
At Combs Ford Primary School we know that phonics provides the foundations of reading upon which children can develop into fluent readers and confident writers. We teach phonics using using Twinkl Phonics, a DfE Validated Scheme.
Through the teaching of phonics our pupils are taught the essential skills needed for early reading and writing. Twinkl Phonics is systematic, synthetic programme which means that first the children are taught the letter sounds and then build up to blending the sounds together to read whole words through engaging, interactive and repetitive activities. Each phonics lesson includes the following elements: revisit, teach, practise, apply, and we build in regular opportunities for assessment to inform planning and to enable staff to identify any children falling behind so they can be given targeted support.
Our reading scheme - 'Rhino Readers' - works alongside Twinkl Phonics to consolidate children's learning by making sure that all books are fully decodable at their phonic ability level.
Below are links to the Twinkl Phonics Parent Information Sheets. If you are unsure which level your child is, then please speak to their class teacher.
Please use these Parent Information Sheets to support your child with their phonics learning. A secure understanding of phonics is important so that your child can achieve their full potential in all areas of the curriculum.
